As Abby Wambach Hangs Up Her Cleats, She Tells Fans: 'Forget Me'

As if we didn't have enough reasons to love Abby Wambach. In a Gatorade campaign, the soon-to-retire soccer great urges people to "forget her":

Forget the medals won, the records broken and the sacrifices made. I want to leave a legacy where the ball keeps rolling forward, where the next generation accomplishes things so great that I am no longer remembered. So, forget me, because the day I'm forgotten is the day we will succeed.

To that end, Wambach says she's going to deactivate her social media accounts before Wednesday night's game with the the U.S. Women's National Team in New Orleans. It will be the last game of a storied career that includes two Olympic gold medals, a FIFA Women's World Cup championship win, and countless awards. According to Forbes, she plans to return to social media, but only after the buzz from her retirement fades.Wambach is a sports legend, but she's also an active philanthropist, donating her time and money to such causes as the Epilepsy FoundationJuvenile Diabetes Research FoundationChildren's Hospital Los Angeles,  Mia Hamm Foundation and Athlete Ally, a nonprofit targeting homophobia and transphobia in sports.

Abby, we understand and admire what you're doing with this Gatorade campaign, but we're afraid we can never forget you.
